Angela Calnan

Group Partner - Collas Crill

Angela heads Collas Crill’s fiduciary practice in Guernsey and leads its Middle East Practice Group.

She is regarded as the 'go to' lawyer in Guernsey for Middle East private client work and foundations. She establishes, reorganises and terminates offshore dynastic structures (i.e. structures involving a combination of trusts, foundations and companies).

Having lived and worked in the UAE for a number of years, those structures are often (but not exclusively) for Middle Eastern families and commonly involve a family business and UK/UAE residential real estate.

Angela also advises DIFC and onshore UAE companies about their end of service gratuity obligations and assists them to establish offshore trusts in Guernsey to fund those obligations. Notably, in 2020 Angela drafted the first Guernsey "off the shelf" trust solution for DIFC companies and Guernsey trustees to use if they wish to opt out of the Dubai Government's "DEWS" Scheme.

Angela also advises Guernsey trustees on their duties and on matters of risk when taking on, administering and exiting trust and foundation structures. She has a particular interest in avoiding and resolving trust disputes in conjunction with her dispute resolution team in Guernsey
