A plane takes off from Guernsey AirportGuernsey Finance has welcomed the return of a direct Guernsey-Heathrow daily service as good news for business in the island.

Flybe will operate a daily return to Heathrow from 31 March for a trial period of seven months with flights at convenient times for overnight services out of Heathrow, returning during the day.

The States of Guernsey’s Committee for Economic Development described the new service as “excellent news for all travellers” and particularly for the island’s business community, which has long pushed for enhanced air connectivity to strengthen the island’s competitiveness.

The move will offer a number of potential code share partner opportunities and onward connections across the United States, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

“As a global specialist financial services centre, connectivity is a crucial part of our success,” said Guernsey Finance Chief Executive Dominic Wheatley. “The ability for our people to easily reach our chosen global markets and for clients to get to Guernsey in a convenient way is important to us all.

“We have been without a Heathrow link for 20 years and have prospered during that time, but I’m sure we all look forward to seeing the benefits of the return of a Heathrow service.”

Economic Development is providing financial route development from the Future Guernsey Economic Fund, which was supported by the Policy & Resources Committee, and the airport is applying its new route charges discount policy which is supported by the States’ Trading Supervisory Board.

“The new Heathrow route marks the delivery of the Committee’s top are and sea links objective – agreed by the States of Guernsey in December – to secure worldwide connectivity through a major international hub. It will be important for business in providing addition connectivity to London, and to developing Guernsey’s international reputation and profile,” the committee said.
